Planning the map

Today, both myself and Suzie have received a copy of the route for the heritage walk aspect. See below. As neither of us could understand it, we have decided to google map it here:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=106860212783392730696.00048184487f545d5d0d2

However, we are both concerned that the map is not entirely correct as instructions such as ‘meet Sonia at the crown’ has been left on the map – this leads us to believe that the route may be for the judges, and not for the public. We are also concerned that the walk is actually not a walk, as both a barge and a car to complete the route. From this we are considering looking at smaller routes within the route which may make the route more achievable for young families and elderly alike.

Map research

Map Research 1

The Recycling Centre

After meeting with the council regarding the project at the recycling centre, they have listed things that they might like out of the project. These integrated things such as a story book, posters, short films and other auxiliary items for their learning centre. These are all based on the recycling in a universal sense and did not seem to relate to the project what so ever. Despite this, they are still hoping to gain something out the ‘battery bee/walk’ aspect of proceedings. After toying with the notion of developing graphics for things such as bees, or developing a tale of the recycling angel bee, we have decided to follow up on the map concept. The reason for not developing the other two concepts due to the fact that other groups had come up with the idea, and that angels may reference too much to region respectively.

Our initial concepts for the maps involve using interactivity and visual simulation to guide the walkers around, and so we will be researching into mash-ups, map design and also semiotics!

Final Froot Tea (Starpack)

Final design sent to starpacks for a tea packaging design for a younger market.

My basic concept was to try and make something visually appealing which stood out against the classic and somewhat more refined packaging that tea is normally found in.

Map Madness (W-in-B)

For this particular brief, myself and suzie have decided to focus our attention to the route aspect of the project, as it seems everyone else has gone battery bee mad! The main reason for us taking this approach is because the maps given are not user friendly what so ever.

Visit to recycling centre

As part of our Wrexham in bloom brief in association with wrexham council, we paid a visit to recycling plant on the industrial estate. Although it was not the grand tour we all expected, it was useful in finding out what the council is all about in terms of its recycling ethos with the community (mainly young people and schools).

In their resource room, they have tried to incorporate lots of interactive feature for the children to look at. (For example, a hole to put your hands in and feel what is recyclable). However, it was surrounded by text and facts, and no body was bothered to read it. In fact when you did read it, it was extremely confusing and didn’t seem relevant in certain points. The most interesting part was watching the trucks in the recycling area, not only because I am a complete and utter big kid, but also because it illustrated the process that the rubbish goes though from the ‘kerb side collections’.The brief however has changed slightly. Now, insted of it being the battery bee concept (which I actually think could work) it will be a list of 10 desirable which they would like – mostly relating to recycling as oppose to the walk. I for one, will ignore this, and carry on with the initial brief.
